Customer's opinions

I wanted to surprise my husband with a special gift for our anniversary, and ordered a portrait of us from Attila. I showed him my favorite photo taken at our wedding ceremony, and he painted it in a gorgious artwork. I was shocking from the result, it was more beautiful than I could have imagine it before. My husband was so happy about my gift. I strongly suggest Attila's artworks, he draws portraits in a special quality. Thank you for your work!

“I've always wanted to get my portrait done so when my partner surprised me with a realistic one of me and my daughter I was truly amazed. At first I could not believe that it was a piece of art made by hands as it looked so realistic just as a photograph.Every little detail is so perfectly worked out along with the outstanding shading technique so that it is really difficult to tell whether it’s taken by a camera or drawn by hands. All in all it is the most perfect gift I could ever asked for and I would truly recommend the artist.”

The gist of dry brush technique

The dry brush technique is a painting technique for which diluent and art eraser is used. Mostly a thicker kind of aquarelle paper is used, but canvas can be painted on as well. The realistic look is what makes it interesting.

This is a custom portrait painting method for the elaboration of the small differences in tone. Moreover, it’s very durable thanks to the thinness of the oil layer.

The condition for this is that the painting is kept away from sunlight and, if possible, in a frame, so that it’s closed off oxygen by a glass, which ensures the durability. If the coverage of the surface is not wanted with a glass, the painting still remains to be a durable décor of your home.

The reason for this is that the oil layer is very thin on the surface of the painting so it dries quite quick and stays on the aquarelle paper or canvas. Naturally it is the most durable closed off oxygen by a glass.

What does dry brush technique really mean?

The question may arise about how to dry brush paint? Well, in reality the brush is not dry. The name comes from the process in which the artist puts very small amount of oil paint and diluent on the brush and wipes off that amount of the brush accurately. This minimizes the oil paint in the brush. The brush might look dry at first sight, but that naturally isn’t the case.

On the other hand, this makes it possible to picture precisely the small differences in shade visible. The technique itself isn’t enough, the sophisticated use of the brush is very important as well.

Pencil drawing or oil painting?

At first sight a painting made with dry brush technique might look similar to a professional pencil, coal or pastel drawing which was smeared. In reality it’s an oil painting, which will look very realistic in the end. This depends on what kind of brush the artists are using, how experienced and how good they are at the dry brush technique.

The artist usually contours the outlines of the shapes with a pencil and then starts to paint the oil paint layers with the dry brush technique. Some artists start immediately with the painting and make the custom portrait in this wise. This is uncommon, since you cannot really make any mistakes/changes unlike painting with conventional oil paint. It’s hard to amend in this painting technique therefore it needs enormous attention and concentration. This technique requires a lot of ruined paintings and a lot of practice.

In short, the dry brush technique is a unique technique, which means that custom portraits can be made with it too.

It is completely different from conventional oil painting how oil paint is used in this way. The technique requires minimal oil paint and the layers are applied very gently from the very beginning. Those artists are good at dry brush painting who work sophisticated and precisely.

Similarity is however, that by both techniques the finished portrait or theme is done with many layers.

The origin of the dry brush technique

This painting technique is pretty modern as it started to develop a little more than one hundred years ago amongst soviet artists who made their living painting portraits on the streets. The birth of the dry brush technique was largely due to the need to quickly draw lifelike, and if possible, unique custom portraits on the street. With this technique they could halve the time for painting a portrait.

Of course for this to achieve one needs many practice and precise observing capability. In most cases here, the proportions of the portrait painting were immediately formed with a brush without drawing the outlines.

Nowadays this technique is becoming more widespread, but few can use it in the most correct way. There is also a growing interest for this technique among artists and dilettantes.

I must emphasize the importance of portrait painting since this technique comes from artists painting portraits on the streets. Of course other themes can be painted with it as well. For example, a pet portrait of our loved one.

I think this is most similar to portrait painting. For me, the best way to paint portraits is in black-and-white.

A portrait painted with dry brush technique represents exactly this classic art style. As a plus, it saturates the paper or canvas much better due to the oil paint. This makes the effect look more lifelike and refined. It adds a plus that brings the portrait painting closer to a realistic effect.

Transportation of the portrait painting

Last but not least, since it can be painted on thick aquarelle paper with this technique, it can make the transport much easier even over long distances. The aquarelle paper can be rolled up and placed in a plastic cylinder which protects it against possible external influences. In contrast, a canvas painting, for example, cannot be rolled up, therefore the packaging and transportation is more difficult, but of course nowadays these can be made pretty safely as well.

As I mentioned above under the right conditions the painting (kept away from sunlight, in a frame that is closed off oxygen by a glass) the portrait painting can remain an enjoyable décor for a very-very long time.

In conclusion, custom portraits or other themes can be painted with dry brush technique as well. The main feature of this technique is that it requires very sophisticated movements and minimal use of materials. This leads to that kind of visual effect, what we can see in our everyday lives.
